SIGN: A New Opportunity for Orthopedics at CMB

The first and only orthopedic surgical service in the Northwest Department of Haiti was initiated at CMB 18 months ago with the arrival of orthopedic surgeon, Dr Isaac Archelus. Previously, orthopedic trauma patients were either managed conservatively by the physicians onsite or referred to distant centers. But now, with the arrival of Dr Archelus, we are able to provide effective surgery and implants to these patients.

In addition, a year ago with the help of friends and supporters we were able to qualify for a partnership with SIGN Fracture Care. The program gives the injured poor in developing countries access to effective orthopedic care by providing surgeons in low-resource hospitals with relevant education, instruments and surgical implants. Six months later, after a very long strenuous process of getting customs clearance, we were able to receive our initial set of orthopedic instruments from SIGN. To date five patients have benefitted from this life-changing program.
