Lazarus: A Second Chance at Life

Nesly works hard to support his child, taking on jobs ranging from construction to planting crops. But when persistent abdominal pain and vomiting brought him to Centre Médical Beraca (CMB), he faced a life-threatening emergency.

Doctors diagnosed a perforated gastric ulcer that had caused peritonitis, requiring emergency surgery. During the operation, Nesly suffered cardiac arrest, and the medical team performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to revive him. Afterward, he spent several days in CMB’s intensive care unit (ICU), receiving close monitoring and critical support during this vulnerable stage of his recovery.

Today, Nesly is known as “Lazarus.”

His story highlights the importance of CMB’s newly inaugurated ICU. Following a life-threatening event such as cardiac arrest, patients need continuous observation and specialized care. The ICU gave Nesly a place to receive this essential support as he recovered.

Your generosity helps make this kind of lifesaving care possible. Thanks to the faithful support of donors like you, CMB is better equipped to care for patients facing serious medical emergencies. These gifts help provide advanced medical care even to patients who cannot afford the full cost of their treatment.

But Nesly’s story is about more than physical healing. During his hospital stay, he spoke with a CMB chaplain, prompting him to reflect on his spiritual life. He shared, “I am not a Christian, but after my talk with the chaplain, I will start going to church.”

We are grateful for the opportunity to share not only medical care but also the truth and compassion of Christ with patients and their families. Please join us in praying for Nesly—that the seeds planted through his experience at CMB will take root, that he will continue exploring faith in Christ, and that he will come to know Jesus personally.

Nesly’s recovery reminds us why CMB’s work matters. Every day, our medical team cares for patients in their most vulnerable moments, offering skilled treatment, compassion, and the hope of Christ.

From January through September, our clinic recorded 33,479 patient visits, reflecting the continued need for and impact of its healthcare services. During this same period, our chaplaincy team shared the Gospel with 1,866 people, and 31 individuals accepted Christ as their Savior. These numbers highlight our commitment to caring for both the physical and spiritual needs of the people we serve.

Thank you for making this ministry possible. Through your prayers and generosity, you help CMB bring healing and hope to people throughout northwest Haiti, caring for both body and soul.
